The UK Championship
The UK Snooker Championship is a professional men’s snooker championship sponsored by Betway. The championship is only second to the world championship and is ranked among the prestigious Triple Crown events.
The championship is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year having been held for the first time in 1977. As at the time it was only open for British residents and formal passport holders. The inaugural edition was won by Patsy Fagan taking home £2000 as prize money. The latest edition of 2016 was won by Mark Selby, taking home £170,000 as prize money. Since these humble beginnings, the event has gained fame around the world and has cemented its place as the premier snooker competition on the globe today.
Records and memorable plays
Throughout its 40year existence, the UK snooker championship has witnessed some magnificent plays that will be forever be endeared by all snooker fans. Here’s a sneak peek at some of these memorable moments.
2017 UK Snooker Championship
The 2017 edition is set to return to its traditional home at the York Barbican and will take place on Tuesday the 28th of November to Sunday the 10th of December. This year’s edition promises to be a great event pitting some of the world’s best players against each other.
What to expect in this year's championship
The 2017 championship will kick off with World’s number one Mark Selby facing off Egypt’s Basem Eltahhan in a bid to defend the title he won last year. Selby beat Ronnie O’Sullivan to the title in 2016 to cap a fantastic year for the Englishman. However, you can expect Basem to put in a spirited fight when he plays the champion on the 29th of November. In another matchup, it will be an all-British affair when Ronnie O’Sullivan takes on Scotland’s Rhys Clark. Ronnie is last year’s finalist and will be hoping to duplicate last year's form and cap it with a win. He will, however, be wary of the very talented Rhys Clark who is having a good year. Other top players to look out for include Shaun Murphy, Jimmy White, Paul Davidson, Adam Duffy and Sanderson Lam. The 2017 final will take place on Sunday 10th December, and the winner will take home £170,000 as prize money with the runner-up taking home £75,000. Whichever way you look at it we are set for a massive tournament this year. Selby will be looking to seal his second title in three years, but he will be wary of his main challenger Ronnie O'Sullivan.
