As the competition gets even hotter, there are surely going to be lots of unexpected events yet to be seen as five of the mightiest teams in the sport get reduced down to just two, as the top two places have already been secured by the Chiefs and Sarries, in the qualification race as the semi-finals of the Aviva Premiership beckon.
A fantastic five-game winning streak by Leicester Tigers in the Aviva Premiership came to a dramatic end with a 21-27 home defeat against Northampton in round 20. This season the Tigers have won 6 out of their 10 home games in the league. There has only been one defeat for Newcastle Falcons in the previous six rounds o and this was in round 19 with a disappointing and surprising 13-27 score at Worcester.
Leicester Tigers have seen decisive victories against the Newcastle Falcons in their last four matches. It was back on the 30th December 1997 when the Newcastle Falcons won at Welford Road in a close fort match that ended with a score of 25-19. Before that, it was way back in April 1977 when they won against the Leicester Tigers with a score of 18-6 at Gosforth RFC.
In actual fact, Newcastle Falcons have only won one match against Leicester Tigers in any competition since 2009, with a score of 14-26 in the Aviva Premiership in February 2016
An amazing seven in a row match victory has been relished by Exeter Chiefs across all competitions. Their reversal with a score of 7-13 to Wasps, playing away in the 15th round of the Aviva Premiership was quite a surprise. The only defeat by the Chiefs in the Aviva Premiership since October 2016 has been against Worcester in February 2018 at Sandy Park and this was only by a single point.
A three-games in a row winning streak was enjoyed by Sale Sharks in the league which came to an end with a 30-35 loss against Newcastle in round 20.
Away from home, Sharks have only won three times this season in the Premiership, these wins being at London Irish, Northampton and Worcester. In their last six head to heads, Exeter have only lost to Sale once and this was back in February 2016 at the AJ Bell Stadium during a closely fought match which ended 17-23.
In the last six rounds of the Aviva Premiership Wasps have only won twice and these two victories were against the two bottom clubs, London Irish and Worcester Warriors, both at the Ricoh Arena.
Northampton Saints have had a disappointing four-game losing streak, but this finally came to a spectacular end, when they won against Leicester in round 20 at Welford Park. Saints have failed to win successive away games in one season in this championship since 2014/15 and have also lost the last five games against Wasps.
The last win by Northampton with a score of 52-30 was at Franklin’s Gardens in March 2015, they have lost four times during their previous visits to the Ricoh Arena with their last victory away to Wasps was in December 2013 at Wasps old home, Adams Park.
