Premier League Match Day 23 Fixtures & Previews

Match Day 23 saw the premiership in action again, and the pick of the bunch was the game between Arsenal v Chelsea, which has closed the table right up. This week sees Liverpool and Manchester City seemingly out on their own with Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United vying for third spot. Little is likely to change in terms of league table positions but at the close of play on Wednesday, we may well have a better idea of who is more likely to make the top four come the end of the season.

Bournemouth v Chelsea - Wed 30th Kick Off @ 1745hrs

The Central London side Chelsea visit Bournemouth on Wednesday for the late game. Going into the match, Chelsea are 17 points ahead of Bournemouth who are trying not to be sucked into the relegation fight. Chelsea played on Sunday against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA cup, and rested the majority of their senior players. Thanks largely to Willian – the man of the match – Chelsea won the game 3 – 0. However, it looks increasingly likely that the talented 18 year old Hudson-Adoi will leave the club in favour of Bayern Munich. Newcomer Higuain looked sharp up front in his first game, and could start at Bournemouth.

Bournemouth have been very busy in the January transfer window, and have pulled off some unbelievable deals. Domonic Solanke and Nathaniel Clyne have signed from Liverpool, which will give support in defence from Clyne and another striker in the shape of Slanke, who featured heavily in Gareth Southgate’s cup winning under 21s. Also joining the Cherries is Chris Mepham from Brentford. Referee Roger East takes charge of the game at the Vitallity on Wednesday evening. He’ll have his work cut out as these two teams will be playing an open style of football. It should be a very lively game indeed.

Tottenham v Watford - Wed 30th Kick of at 2000hrs

Tottenham seem to be having their usual season meltdown, and to make things worse, they have lost Harry kane and Deli Ali through injury. After a 2-0 loss in the fourth round of the FA cup to Crystal Palace on Sunday, Pochettino’s men have to lick their wounds and get ready to face Watford late on Wednesday. A series of missed chances seems to be the explanation from the Argentinian manager, which sort of sums Tottenham up perfectly.

Watford are in much better spirits after beating Newcastle in the FA cup away from home. The aptly named Issac Success was on the score sheet once again, and is expected to start the game on Wednesday. The Hornets manager said after the game at Newcastle that “I believe in all my players”, and he’ll have to if they are to overcome a downbeat Spurs, who have to turn their recent form around.

Manchester United v Burnley - Tues Kick off 2000hrs

One month ago, nobody would have given United a chance of catching the top four, let alone contending for a place in the Champions League next season. Mourinho had said ‘they would need a miracle’. That miracle came in the form of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, already a legend at the club, who has led them to victory in every game since taking over in December. This run of victories has put them level on points with Arsenal, and only goal difference separates them. A dominant display against Arsenal last time out in the FA cup can only make matters worse for Burnley.

Burnley are in a bit of trouble at the moment, hovering in sixteenth position 3 points above the relegation zone. Off of a punishing defeat against Manchester City in the FA cup, manager Sean Dyche said his team is showing signs of promise. He highlighted the outstanding performance of Dwight McNeil as a shining example of the emergence of Burnley’s youth team. However, they are going to need a huge effort to overpower United.
