The 2018 – 2019 Premiership Rugby season kicks off on 31st August 2018. This season will be the 32nd since the top-flight English league began. As the clubs seek to bring new players, the Premiership Rugby also welcomes a new title partner changing the competition’s name to Gallagher Premiership Rugby.
Newly-promoted Bristol Bears match against Bath Rugby is one of the fiercest rivalries in Premiership Rugby. Over 20,000 fans will be heading down to the Ashton Gate stadium to witness this clash. Bath Rugby has been more dominant of the two winning five of the six encounters with no draws. Their most recent match was on 26th February 2017 where Bristol Bears edged out Bath Rugby 12–11.
The new season brings with it new faces as both teams revamped their squads. Pat Lam’s side broke the premiership records with the signing of Charles Piutau, former All-Blacks full-back for a whopping £1m season deal making him the most expensive rugby player.
Unfortunately, it is highly likely that the much-awaited home debut for Charles Piutau will not happen with the player nursing a shoulder injury sustained during pre-season against Connacht.
Todd Blackadder’s Bath Rugby team will be looking to finish this season in the top four after finishing the 2017/2018 season in 6th place. From a total of 22 games, Bath won 11 matches and losing the rest. New signings Jackson Willison (Worcester Warriors) and Jamie Roberts (Harlequins) are likely to partner in the centre after a good performance in their final pre-season match against Scarlets. Rhys Priestland was last season’s Bath Rugby’s top scorer with 149 points is set to wear the captain's armband this season. Jonathan Joseph and Anthony Watson are the major injury concerns for Coach Blackadder as the two were out of England’s tour to South Africa.
Exeter Chiefs host The Tigers at Sandy Park who topped the regular 2017/2018 Aviva Premiership Rugby table but fell to Saracens in the finals failing to clinch the trophy as The Tigers managed 5th place last season. These two teams have some memorable encounters in the past the most notable one being the Anglo-Welsh Cup final in 2017 at The Stoop. An interception in the first-half by Tiger’s Tom Brady from a loose pass from Exeter's Matt Jess was enough to ensure the Tigers won the match 16-12 to clinch the title.
The 2017/18 Premiership champions, Saracens will kick-off their campaign as they travel to Kingston Park in what promises to be a mouth-watering clash against Newcastle Falcons who finished fourth.
Previous games between these two in the Premiership rugby have seen Saracens defeat Newcastle Falcons 14 times in as many games. Both teams have key players. Last season’s player of the competition went to Newcastle Falcons’ Vereniki Goneva. The top points scorer in the 2017/2018 premiership was Owen Farrell who scored 217 points.
