Bundesliga Match Day 26 Fixtures & Previews
After a long break, the German Bundesliga will be back in action this weekend. The league’s giants will be taking against each other and smaller teams in another attempt to bolster their positions. Here is a quick look at some of the biggest matches taking part this weekend.
Borussia Dortmund v FC Schalke 04 – Saturday 16th May
The second-placed Borussia Dortmund will be taking on the sixth-placed FC Schalke at Signal Iduna Park. Like all other games in the league, fans will be watching on TV as part of the measures to stem the coronavirus. Dortmund is keen on closing the gap with Bayern Munich, who are four points ahead at 55. On their part, Schalke is looking to maintain the position in the face of the onslaught from VfL Wolfsburg.
Dortmund has been ruthless since the turn of the year, especially in home games. Overall, the team has hit fifteen straight wins and six draws in this season’s campaign. On the other hand, Schalke has had a rather strong performance, but no goals seem to be forthcoming. They have won nine matches and drawn a whopping ten. Dortmund is expected to win, but the opponent is likely to drop one or two goals.
RB Leipzig v SC Freiburg – Saturday 16th May
In another match of interest, the third-placed RB Leipzig will be inviting Sport-Club Freiburg to the Red Bull Arena. Leipzig is also putting up pressure on the league leaders FC Munchen who are just five points away. It hopes to gain the three points and edge out Dortmund. SC Freiburg has had a disastrous campaign, losing almost half of their matches. Despite the rather poor performance this season, both teams have near equal performance in their face-offs. In the last two games, each one of them won a match. However, RB Leipzig is known to perform well when at home and this is expected although they will not be having their fans. On the other hand, SC Freiburg will be looking for at least a draw from the match.
Eintracht Frankfurt v Borussia Mönchengladbach – Saturday 16th May
Borussia Mönchengladbach will be travelling to Commerzbank Arena to meet the struggling Eintracht Frankfurt. The hosts are placed twelfth, having won just eight matches and drawn four in the last 24 encounters. On the other hand, Mönchengladbach at fourth position, a point below RB Leipzig.
The away team seeks to get all the three points in a bid to avoid being dethroned by Leverkusen, who are just two points below it. However, if the match goes this way, Eintracht could be edging closer to the relegation section. From the past performance in the season, the team has earned 21 points out its 28 from home matches, some of which were against the top four teams. Therefore, it is not going to be a walk in the park for the visiting team.
FC Union Berlin v FC Bayern München – Sunday 17th May
The league leaders will be travelling to An der AltenForsterei to meet the eleven placed FC Union Berlin. The league leaders are so under heavy fire from Dortmund and Leipzig that it cannot afford to lose any points. On the other hand, Union is the surprise package for the season, having been promoted alongside Paderborn and Cologne after beating VfB Stuttgart. On their way to the position, they have beaten giants such as Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund. Therefore, it will not be a walk in the park for Bayern Munich.
In the last meeting by the two teams, the champions beat the Berliners 2-1. Therefore, for the Union to shake things up this time around, they would need to go full throttle. Given their past performance, there should not be a wide goal difference even if they lose the match. One interesting fact in their campaign in this season is that the top scorer, Andersson, has scored six of his eleven goals with headers. He will be a man to watch in the match.
SV Werder Bremen v Bayer 04 Leverkusen – Monday 18th May
SV Werder Bremen will be inviting Bayer Leverkusen to the WESERSTADION on Monday, 18th May. The team is on the verge of relegation at the second last position with just 18 points over the previous 24 matches. They have lost their last six home encounters and have not scored in five. The top scorer for the team, Claudio Pizarro, has scored 12 goals in his 18 career meetings. However, he has not scored a single goal in his 15 appearances this season.
On the other hand, Leverkusen has collected 19 points this year, coming third after Dortmund and Bayern Munich. The team is firmly cemented in the fifth position, with 10 points ahead of the sixth-placed FC Schalke 04. It is expected to pick the three possible points from this match, putting the host in a position of no return in the relegation zone. Pundits expect over two goals as a betting option in this match.
