Chelsea v Arsenal: Road to the Final
Arsenal did really well in the group stages of the league. They won their first game against the Ukranian side Vorskla Poltava 4-2 before securing a 3-0 win against Quarabag from Azerbaijan. The even won their away matches against these two teams. Their biggest threat came from Sporting CP but they even managed to win the first leg and draw the second 0-0. They then took on BATE Borisov from Belarus, losing their first leg 1-0 before cruising to victory 3-0 in the second. They earned themselves a place in the quarterfinals by beating France’s Stade Rennais 4-3 on aggregate. From there they sailed past Napoli 3-0 on aggregate to take on Valencia in the semi-finals. In two thrilling matches in which Arsenal won 3-1 and 4-2, the team did what they couldn’t do in 2018 and earned themselves a place in the final.
Chelsea also seemed to have an easy time of it during the group stages. During their group matches, they took on the likes of PAOK Salonica from Greece, MOL Vidi from Hungary and BATE Borisov from Belarus. The Chelsea team looked strong against each of the teams they faced in the group stage, right up until the last match, where MOL Vidi managed to hold them to a 2-2 draw. This didn’t matter however, Chelsea had already comfortably qualified for the knockout stages. Unlike Arsenal, they didn’t struggle at all in the first matches of their line-up. They had comfortable wins against Malmo from Sweden and Dynamo Kiev. It got trickier in the quarterfinals, however when Slavia Prague fought hard only to lose 5-3 on aggregate. The semifinals were even tougher, in fact, Chelsea ended up drawing 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt on aggregate. Their place in the final was only decided thanks to a penalty shoot-out.
Chelsea are currently the favourites to lift the Europa League trophy although most pundits agree that this will be a closely fought match. Chelsea obviously struggled in the semifinal against Eintracht Frankfurt but on paper, they have performed better than Arsenal throughout the competition. When they have met in the Premier League this season both teams have also performed equally well. Indeed, both teams earned themselves a win at home against the other. They are two teams who know each other really well and so, this will be a close match and it could be down to the two stars of each team, Eden Hazard and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to decide the results.
Chelsea has, however, received recent news of an injury that could affect their chances. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, their midfielder has been ruled out of the final after rupturing his Achilles tendon. He is due to have surgery in the coming week after being pulled out of the charity friendly match in the USA at the weekend. Loftus-Cheek scored in the semifinal matchup, demonstrating that he was on top form so this will come as a real blow to Chelsea. The Arsenal team, meanwhile, seem to be injury-free. You never know they just might be able to steal the cup from under Chelsea’s nose.
