We are heading into the final weekend of Premiership action with all but the final Champions League slot decided. Even though the league’s fixture list is designed to prevent top teams playing versus one another on the final day of the season, there are still stakes on the line and matches to be excited for. Liverpool need a point to secure the must-have Champions League spot due to their superior goal difference over Chelsea who could only manage a lacklustre draw against Huddersfield Town in midweek. The draw brought much disappointment to Chelsea n fans but sent the Terriers fans delirious with joy with the point securing their Premiership lifeline for next season. All games will be played on Sunday 13th May, kick-off @ 1500hrs
This would be the highlight of the day as it will mark the end of The Wenger era after 22 years with the Gunners. Arsene Wenger has already enjoyed his final home game in charge of the club with a 5-0 victory against Burnley last week. Arsenal have already booked a spot in the Europa League for next season and clinched 6th place in the Premiership but will want a minimum of a point as they are the only top flight club in Europe without an away point this calendar year.
Nothing will dampen the Huddersfield Town party having managed to avoid the drop, after being favourites for a swift return to the Championship at the start of the season. They have secured premiership survival the hard way gaining away points against the Champions Man City and Chelsea in the past week so will not fear the visit of the Gunners.
Well done to The Terriers and farewell to Arsene.
The Toon Army will be in full swing for their final game of the season and will be urging Rafa to stay and continue their revival. Newcastle’s recent performances may have been bland but they have a mid-table finish after a stuttering start with a lacklustre squad.
Chelsea will be looking for a win and hoping Liverpool slip up against Brighton allowing them to sneak the all important Champions League place. Chelsea’s attack will need to sharpen up after lacking a cutting edge in their 1-1 draw against Huddersfield in midweek if they are to beat the Toon.
Will Rafa and Conte be with their respective sides next Season?
Anfield will be buzzing as the fans will be urging the Reds on to secure Champions League football for next season as well as giving them a great send off to the Champions League Final later this month in Kiev. The second top scorers of the League (80) with the League’s top scorer (31 - Salah) will be looking to entertain their fans with non-stop attacking football, hoping their achilles heel, their defence is not called into too much action.
Brighton can be happy with their season as they have retained their Premier League status, as have all the promoted sides from last season. Chris Houghton has done a remarkable job on the south coast and will be urging his chargers on to spoil the Anfield party even though they have nothing but pride to play for.
Manchester City already hold the title but will be looking to become the first English top flight team to reach 100 points in a season, this after already securing Premiership Records for most goals scored in a season (105), league Wins in a season (31) and Premiership points (97) Southampton have managed to escape relegation, albeit not mathematically, with the 1 nil victory in midweek over Swansea. Swansea now need to win and swing a 10 goal deficit in their last Game against the already relegated Stoke to send the Saints down - if they fail to get anything out of this game.
The Cityzens would love a cricket score against Southampton and of course are capable of it, but Saints will be organised by Mark Hughes, who is seeking a new contract, knowing their fate is in their own hands albeit their Premiership survival has been secured.
