Matchday One in the season has passed, and the season has kicked off in style, with Liverpool setting the early pace after their impressive 4-0 victory over West Ham. Meanwhile, an early defeat against the champions Manchester City has laid clear the work ahead of Unai Emery’s Arsenal side.
The clear feature game of Matchday Two is this clash at Stamford Bridge, with Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea taking on the Gunners. Games between the two never disappoint, and Sarri’s passing style will be coming up against the new structures that Emery is looking to implement in what will be a fascinating clash of styles. Also of interest will be the possibility of Giroud and Fabregas coming back to haunt their former employers at Arsenal.
The Blues had an impressive start to the season, beating Huddersfield 3-0 away. Goals from Kante, new boy Jorginho and Pedro gave Chelsea the scoreline their performance deserved, while Arsenal got off to a rocky start as they were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Pep Guardiola’s City. There were some encouraging signs for the Gunners, however, particularly in the performance of their 19-year-old new signing Matteo Guendouzi.
The London sides have a fierce rivalry, but Arsenal have not won at Stamford Bridge since 2011 when they secured a 5-3 victory. Since then, Chelsea have dominated Arsenal at home, including an infamous 6-0 victory in Arsene Wenger’s 1000th game as Arsenal manager. Chelsea will be looking to continue their form and will be able to welcome Eden Hazard back into the starting line-up for the weekend. Arsenal are in the midst of an injury crisis at left-back, with Sead Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles both injured and Nacho Monreal only just returning to fitness.
Tottenham will be taking on Premiership new boys Fulham in what should have been their first game at the new White Hart Lane, the game will instead be played at Wembley due to delays Spurs have had in getting their stadium completed in time for the new season. On the pitch, Tottenham have not had any similar problems in getting going, beating Newcastle 2-1 at St. James’ Park. Goals from Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli gave Spurs a hard-fought victory, and they will be looking to pick up where they left off against Fulham.
The Cottagers were beaten 2-0 at home by Crystal Palace, but hopes are still high following their transfer spending. They will be looking to new signings Jean Seri and Andre Schurrle to lead the way alongside the likes of Tom Cairney and Ryan Sessegnon, who was a transfer target for Spurs.
Harry Kane will be looking to break his unwanted record of never scoring in August, and Spurs will be able to put out a squad that more closely resembles their first team following a number of their players having an extended rest following their World Cup exploits.
Everton will be looking to build on their opening day draw at Wolves as they welcome Southampton.
The Toffees splashed the cash this summer, with their record signing Richarlison already proving some of his worth with two well taken goals in the 2-2 draw. Marco Silva will be looking for Everton to follow this up with a victory against Mark Hughes’ men, who could only manage the weekend’s sole 0-0 draw against Burnley.
Southampton could be spearheaded up front by their new signing Danny Ings, purchased from Everton’s Merseyside rivals Liverpool. He has previous against the Blues, opening the scoring for former side Liverpool at Goodison Park back in 2015.
