International Cricket Gets Off To A Bang In 2019

International ODI and Test cricket open the year with a packed schedule from January through to March, a break in April, and then the ODI action continues from May until July. One Day cricket throws up some really freaky results, which are totally against the run of play, and this is what makes cricket one of the biggest betting markets out there. Check out all the odds at Skybet.

Cricket Just Keeps Getting Better

In the coming months, we will bear witness to some of the best cricket matches imaginable with the usual suspects playing for their country, and a fair amount of honour too. Rivalries established long ago are as fierce as they ever were. The top dogs at the moment are England, and under the captaincy of Eion Morgan look to be in great shape to stay there. However, depending who you ask, England’s batting order is the only chink in their armour.

Are England Out For the Count This Time?

Concerns over the batting order were proven to be real, and demonstrated perfectly in the first test of three in the West Indies where England were embarrassingly thrashed. In a packed out stadium in Bridgetown, England’s batting completely collapsed. Although Joe Root was apologetic about the team’s performance, a lot of credit has to go the West Indies for a punishing batting display. England coach Trevor Bayliss seems to be running out of ideas of how to cure the reoccurring problem. However, England have been in this position before and will be keen to avoid a repeat of the first test. All out for 77 just isn’t going to cut the mustard in the next test at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium in Antigua.

There Is More To It Than The Eye Can See

Bowling in cricket doesn’t look that difficult to the untrained eye but don’t be fooled into thinking there is only one technique. The delivery of the ball is categorised in the following ways for fast bowlers:

Fast bowling: Pace and seam or swing bowlers

  • Bouncer: a ball bowled at pace at the batsman, intended to bounce off the pitch
  • Inswinger: a ball bowled on the seam
  • Leg cutter: spins the ball to the left
  • Off cutter: spins the ball to the right
  • Outswinger: swings the ball to the left
  • Reverse swing: swings the ball late
  • Slower ball: slow delivery to fool the batsman
  • Yorker: the ball is aimed at the feet of the batsman
  • Beamer: (illegal) a high ball
  • Knuckle ball: a slower ball than usual, similar to a slower ball

To make things even more complex, ball deliveries can be made by fast bowlers or by spin bowlers. Spin bowlers deliveries are referred to as leg spin and off-spin and are mirrored for left arm unorthodox bowlers.

Leg Spin: Usually right-handed wrist spin

  • Leg break: the ball spins anti-clockwise and bounces to the left
  • Googly: the ball spins clockwise and bounces to the right
  • Top-spinner: the ball spins forwards but dips sooner
  • Flipper: the ball spins backwards and doesn’t rise high off the pitch
  • Slider: wrist span ball combines backspin and side spin
  • Flick ball: a method of spin by flicking the ball between the thumb and middle finger

Off Spin: Usually right-handed finger spin

  • Off-break: the ball spins clockwise and bounces to the right
  • Doosra: the ball spins anti clockwise and bounces to the left
  • Top-spinner: the ball spins forwards but dips sooner
  • Arm ball: the ball has backspin and bounces straight
  • Teesra: traditional back spinner
  • Carrom ball: a method of spin by flicking the ball between the thumb and middle finger

The Hand Is Faster than The Eye But It’s Not Magic

Unless you are fairly keen-eyed, you are unlikely to be able to spot the bowling techniques. However, the easiest way to know is to be able to recognise the players. For instance, Moeen Ali and Jack Leach are spin bowlers. Stuart Broad and James Anderson are fast bowlers. Although on the surface of things, cricket seems to be a simple enough game, to the serious exponents, it is a game of strategy and great skill.
