Premier League Match Day 25 Fixtures & Previews

Liverpool and Manchester City will invariably continue to slog it out at the head of affairs. Each game that passes brings Jurgen Klopp’s Reds a step closer to their first title since 1990. However, titles aren’t won in February, and with so many points still up for grabs, City will not be giving up without a fight even though they lost against Newcastle on Tuesday.

West Ham Utd v Liverpool – Monday Kick off @ 2000hrs

Although the Hammers are fairly comfortable in mid-table, they haven’t been at their best in recent weeks, and facing Liverpool on Monday probably isn’t Manuel Pellegrini’s favoured opponents at the moment, especially after a fairly embarrassing loss to Wolves on Tuesday. West Ham lack real invention in midfield, and are still without Wilshere, Sanchez, and Lanzini to assist, who are all out of action. In all probability, the Hammers may have a chance to penetrate Liverpool’s defence if it isn’t marshalled by the imperious Virgil van Dijk. Andy Carroll – as always – is a doubtful starter, and so Pellegrini is more likely to go for the pace of Hernandez up front, which should complement the strength of Arnautovic, who has dropped the idea of a transfer to China.

Despite their advantage at the top of the table, Liverpool will be under a lot of pressure to deliver another win when they face West Ham at the London Stadium on Monday. Liverpool have a few concerns themselves as the defensive line up remains unclear. Dutchman van Dijk isn’t a certain start, and Lovren is surely out, with Gomez unlikely to return. Manager Klopp may once again pair up Fabinho with van Dijk as centre backs as the Brazilian has performed well in that unaccustomed position. Andy Robertson picks himself at left back while Alexander-Arnold should be fit to resume on the right. James Milner returns from suspension and could stage a comeback with injury doubts about midfielder Wijnaldum. Liverpool fans are pretty euphoric at the moment, but they should avoid developing a false sense of security. After all, 4 years ago, they were in a similar position when Steven Gerrard infamously slipped against Chelsea in 2014, which more or less cost them their first title.

Everton v Wolves - Saturday Kick off @1500hrs

Everton are running short odds at the bookmaker this week of around 5/4 to beat Wolves at Goodison Park. However, that looks pretty unlikely because of the recent defeats to Brighton, Leicester, and Southampton. This has seen the Toffees slip down the order in the table, and confidence must be at a fairly low ebb even though they narrowly beat Huddersfield on Tuesday. Forward Richarlison de Andrade has looked like the real deal as a Premier League striker but has fallen a little short of the fans’ expectations. Marco Silva will, in all certainty, stick with his tried but not so trusted first eleven. If they don’t win, they could well be singing the Blues after this difficult fixture.

Wolverhampton Wanderers could be the surprise of the season under Nuno Esprito Santo’s leadership. The never say die spirit of the team was on show at Liverpool in the FA cup, and against Leicester in the premiership. The Wolves have had three wins on the bounce, and their confidence is at an all time high, especially after a convincing win over West Ham. A less than impressive Everton won’t find the Wolves easy to beat. The Nuno effect failed slightly at Shrewsbury Town last Saturday as Wolves only managed a draw, but that seems to be behind them now.

Manchester City v Arsenal - Sunday Kick off @ 1630

Title hopefuls Manchester City will endeavour to take full advantage of the fact that Liverpool won’t be playing until Monday. Claiming maximum points from Sunday’s home game against Arsenal will heap a little more pressure on Liverpool in spite of the loss to Newcastle. City seem to have hit a sweet spot, and with no injury concerns, it’s hard to see how the Gunners are going to leave the north victorious. With a vast squad to choose from, City can be expected to field their strongest team. Presumably, De Bruyne and Silva will be in midfield supporting an all-star attack of Aguero, Sterling, Jesus, and Sane.

Arsenal will be pleased with the win over Cardiff, but they have got to sort out their defence if they are to have any hope of resisting City. Unai Emery will be glad to have Koscielny back as he is crucial to the defensive line up and should be fully fit following a recent minor injury. The Etihad is a tough place to score goals, but with Aubameyang and Lacazette up front, the Gunners have an outside chance. Arsenal’s season has been a bit up and down, and the loss of Bellerin hasn’t helped, but on occasion, they have shown moments of real quality. The transfers that Emery was chasing look doubtful but may happen, and the most likely is Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona.
